A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by bonding a full replacement tooth between the two adjacent teeth, literally ‘bridging’ the gap. Unlike a partial denture, which is used to address similar issues, the bridge cannot be removed as it is fixed in the mouth.

Leaving a gap unfilled is not recommended as surrounding teeth can move out of position, and may be more susceptible to gum disease and tooth decay. Bridges may assist in reducing the risk of gum disease, and may prevent surrounding teeth from drifting out of alignment. Bridges and can also be used to address speech and bite problems.

Types of bridges include:

  • Traditional fixed– used to replace one or more teeth, using the support of two adjacent teeth.
  • Resin bonded- using resin at the backs of existing teeth to bond replacement front teeth. The bonding is not visible.
  • Cantilever bridge – these are used when there is only one tooth present on the side of the open space.
